Overview

Flashcards MD is a flashcard app for iOS, iPadOS and macOS. This privacy policy explains how Flashcards MD handles data, both in the app and on this website.

The short version: The app has no accounts, no analytics and no advertising, and sends nothing to any server of ours. Your cards are files in a folder you control: on your device, or in your own iCloud Drive. The website processes minimal data as described below.

The App

Data We Collect

Flashcards MD does not collect any personal data. The app does not:

  • Require an account or login
  • Use analytics, tracking or advertising services
  • Send your cards, your learning progress or any other data to a server we operate
  • Access your contacts or your location

Data Stored on Your Device

The app stores the following data in the library folder you choose:

  • Your cards, as Markdown files, including the images you add to them
  • Your learning progress (level and next review date), written into the header of each card file
  • Per-set settings, such as the review direction

App-wide preferences (theme, chosen library location, and similar) are kept in the app’s local storage on the device. We have no way of reading any of it.

Deleting the app deletes the local library folder and the preferences. A library kept in iCloud Drive or in a folder you picked on your Mac is not deleted, because it belongs to you and not to the app.

iCloud Drive

If you choose iCloud Drive as your library location, your card files are stored in your own iCloud Drive and synced between your devices by Apple, under your Apple account. The app does not operate any sync service of its own. The recipient is Apple Distribution International Limited, Hollyhill Industrial Estate, Hollyhill, Cork, Ireland (outside the EEA, Apple Inc., Cupertino, California, USA). For details, see Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Camera and Photo Library

The app asks for access to the camera or your photo library only when you add an image to a card. The image is stored as a file in your library folder and goes nowhere else. You can revoke access at any time in your device’s settings.

Sharing and Export

When you share or export a card or a set, the app hands the file to the system share sheet. Where it goes from there is your choice, and the app does not keep a copy.

In-App Purchases

Premium subscriptions are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Flashcards MD does not receive or store any payment information, billing details or account credentials. The app only asks the App Store whether your Apple account holds an active subscription. For information about how Apple handles your purchase data, see Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Legal Basis

Apart from the iCloud Drive storage you switch on yourself, the app processes no personal data on any system other than your own device. Where your files are stored in iCloud Drive at your request, the legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the storage location you chose).
